Understanding Social Use from Alcoholism and Addiction.
Sometimes, it is quite easy to see the difference between social use, substance abuse and addiction. Then, there are times that the signs and differences between them are subtle and not quite so obvious. Here are some distinguishing characteristics between social use and addiction.
Social Drinking and Drug Use
While not condoned, social drinking and drug use does not mean addiction. Social users:
- Drink or use drugs to enjoy themselves and enhance their pleasure and fun
- Do not experience serious problems, depending on the substance that is being used.
- Social users are in control at all times and do not cross the line and have too much.
-
Do not question themselves about their use; they don't feel they have a problem or issue.
Alcoholics and Drug Addicts Often:
- Drink or use drugs in order to make them feel better about themselves or their life.
- Drink or use drugs in spite of negative consequences associated with their use.
- Exceed their own set limits about how much and often they will use substances.
- Drink or use drugs even though they have promised themselves or others that they will drink or use in moderation.
- Feel guilty and remorseful about their use, unfortunately they can’t seem to change their behavior alone.
- Drink or use drugs even though they get complaints about their abuse. They feel resentful and show disregard for those who comment or complain about it.
